取組の前、力士たちは土俵に向かって塩を撒きます。

「清めの塩」といいます。

It is called "the salt to cleanse".

土俵の邪気を払い清め、神に祈る意味があります。
This act expels the malicious things and cleanses the sumo ring, and has a meaning of praying to God.

また、力士が怪我をしないことを祈り、擦り傷などの殺菌効果もかねています。

ちなみに、三段目以下の力士は塩をまくことができません。

幕下の力士は、時間に余裕のある場合に限り塩をまくことができます。
